AI Agent
What Is an AI Agent?
An AI agent is a software system that can understand a goal, process context, and take action with some ability to operate autonomously. A simple chatbot usually answers a single question or a chain of simple questions, but an AI agent can bring in information, use tools and rules, and respond to what is happening within the product.
AI agents in digital products are usually attached to a particular ecosystem. They can help users in chat, bring relevant information to the table, aid with chat moderation, or fulfill simple tasks without having to push the user away from the platform.
Usually, AI agents are built on the LLM (large language models), and operate with large corpus of texts to make needed conclusions while operating with the task.
AI Agent vs. Chatbot
The terms are commonly used interchangeably, but they’re not the same. A chatbot is primarily designed for conversation. It takes a message and gives a response. An AI agent goes further. It is not only meant to respond, but also to act in a workflow.
For instance, a chatbot can respond to a user question. An AI agent can answer the query, pull live data, apply product logic, or route the user to the next step within the app, especially in products built around in-app chat.
The Importance of having AI Agents in Live Services
AI agents are applicable in products where users need immediate assistance, contextual live information, or lightweight task support without interrupting their journey.
They are often used to:
- answer questions in real time;
- return pertinent product or event context;
- support moderation and message classification;
- help users perform basic actions within the app.
The benefits are clear: users receive answers and help without having to leave the product.
How Product Teams Will Use AI Agents
An AI agent works best when it can connect to the live product environment and operate as part of the app experience. That often means access to product context, internal data, rules, and communication infrastructure.
For apps that already have embedded chat, live interactivity, or social features, AI agents are often integrated directly into the broader in-app experience rather than used as a standalone tool.
