User Engagement

What Is User Engagement?

User engagement is the level of interaction users have with a digital product over time. It shows how frequently users come back, how actively they engage, and whether the product provides enough value to keep them using it.

In practice, engagement is more than opening an app or going to a page. It’s about meaningful activity inside the product, whether that’s reading or reacting or chatting or sharing or participating in live experiences through in-app chat or in-app community.

User Engagement vs. User Retention

User engagement and user retention go hand in hand, but they are not the same.
Engagement is about what users do inside the product and how active they are in doing so. Retention indicates if they return over time. If users keep coming back but do very little once they return, engagement is still low.

Different Ways Product Teams Measure User Engagement

Here are common behaviour and frequency signals that product teams typically use to measure user engagement:

  • active users over time;
  • session frequency and return rate;
  • interaction with key features;
  • depth of activity in content, chat, or live experiences.

The right definition varies by product. In some products, engagement means frequent interaction. In others, it is better understood through the quality and frequency of use. Teams often evaluate this with active user metrics, especially in products built around live participation and community chat.
